There are two varieties of vanilla in French Polynesia: the TAHITIAN VANILLA (vanilla tahitensis), exclusive to French Polynesia, and the MEXICAN VANILLA (vanilla fragans) variety collected in the rest of the world.
The vanilla tahitensis pod is short (10 to 12 cm), indehiscent (it doesn’t open), finer and sweeter to the taste and scent.
With 500 plantations spread over the different archipelagos of French Polynesia, promises of future harvests of the delicate and warmly scented dark pod will bring delight to gourmets and experts around the world.
Its indehiscence, a distinctive feature of this variety, associated with traditional farming methods characterize the premium quality of its pod, whose specificity and fine aroma position the Tahitian vanilla on top of the delicatessen range worldwide, therefore esteemed and appreciated by international experts.
Since 1997, associating traditional farming methods and new techniques brought the Tahitian vanilla to its agricultural revolution. Now facing strong competition from synthetic vanilla and the intrusion of modern life, it springs up again thanks to the Polynesian government and local producers common will. French Polynesia exported in 2009 approximately 11 tons of vanilla generating an annual revenue exceeding 197 million XPF.
