Tahiti and its islands, magnificent string of volcanic islands and atolls which extend over the vast Pacific Ocean, have attracted and inspired visitors for a long time.
After several months at sea, the first European explorers to reach these territories, among whom were Bougainville, Wallis and Cook, were amazed. They thought they had finally discovered the Garden of Eden, the true paradise which by far exceeded the most fabulous dreams of crews. Painters, poets and writers – such as Paul Gauguin or Jacques Brel – were seduced and discovered this peaceful atmosphere, its lights and colours which inspire and fire the creative spirits.
The arrival of the Europeans was an extraordinary encounter, a revolution. Metal suddenly replaced traditional tools and material. Gradually, the sacred ancestral gave way to new, monotheistic religions.
The “Maohi” craft would not have survived it. And yet, the Polynesian craft is in full awakening. In the ancient times, the art did not exist as such in Oceania. There was a sacred art, practised by those initiated, who underwent a very long learning process which conferred them the “Mana”, the magic power on beings and things. And then there was the daily crqft – that of the kitchen and manual labor, that of tool-making essential to everyday life, which each individual performed based on their skills and position in the family; and passed on to the next generation.
Today, the Polynesian art has been enriched from these meetings, while still maintaining its authenticity. By the magic of the forms, the colours, the know-how, or the materials traditionally used, such as mother-of-pearls, tropical wood, vegetable fibres, objects arise to marry tradition and modernism, a reflection of the soul of the Polynesians.
The manual dexterity of the artisans is extremely fertile and comes true in the multiple organized exhibitions of archipelagos all year round. The art of the plaiting produces wonders in the form of hats, bags, baskets and mats. The women of the Astrals are now masters in this discipline, using vegetable fibres of the pandanus, coconut palms or reed “aeho “.
The taste of observation and the love of nature meet in the luxurious “tifaifai” spread in hand sewn floral or ethnic patterns. The craze of women for this element of typical decoration in the Polynesian “fare”, a testament of real creativity, spurred the organization of an annual exhibition of the tifaifai, a true festival of forms and colours. The artistic expression also comes through in the work of the wood, the privilege of men. Therefore, sculptures are done according to the inspiration of the ancestral, graphic and symbolic patterns in precious wood “tou”, “miro” or rosewood. Marquesans excel at it and produce magnificent pieces, lances, puzzles and “umete”(large dish). Volcanic stones, corals, and even bones are used to shape thousands of ornamental or practical objects such as the “penu”, a pounder. Finally, the flourish of mother-of-pearl shells puts in full light the iridescent nuances of polished mother-of-pearls. Their changeable and fascinating tints are an element of decoration of choice to glorify the dancing costumes and brilliant jewels.
